How to Expand Your Reach on Social Media by Tagging Others

I'm not great at acronyms but you can help me get this one off the ground 😉

ATO = Always Tag Others

Although this seems like a no-brainer, you'd be surprised how many social media posts I see from businesses where they visit and/or collaborate with another business and don't tag that business in their post or on their stories. This tip can be used in Facebook and on Instagram!

Why Should You Tag Other Small (and Large) Businesses?

On Facebook, your post will be visible to the followers of the Page your tagged, expanding your reach. This could help you get more followers and engagement. On Instagram, your followers will know exactly which businesses you're talking about and avoid the hassle of searching. Additionally, when you tag a business, the tagged profile gets a message in their DMs that you tagged them in your post and/or story and with stories - will give them an easy option of adding your story to their story. Many small businesses will do this because it increases the trust factor when other profiles are giving them complementary shout-outs!

Who Can I Tag?

  • Tag your gym or personal trainer

  • Tag your hairdresser

  • Tag the coffee shop

  • Tag the business owner you collaborated with

  • Tag the account of a clothing boutique you're wearing

  • Tag a new business that came to town

  • Tag the co-working space you use

  • Tag anyone you want to highlight (new product, new earrings, new bar, new energy drink, etc)

How Does Tagging Increase my Reach, Caroline?

When you repost a post or reel or just type a business name without the '@' symbol, the original creator does not get a notification that you mentioned them or that you shared their content. Like I shared earlier, when you add the "@" tag, the tagged profile gets a message in their DMs that you tagged them in your post and/or story and with stories, will give them the option of adding your story to their story if they would like! This is an EASY and FREE way to get more exposure and potential profile clicks from the TAGGED profile's audience!!

When Shouldn't you Tag?

  • Don't tag randomly without intent

  • Don't tag to the point of being spammy

  • Don't tag to get unnecessary attention

Here's a good rule to follow: Don't be annoying, spammy, and just yuck. Tag with intent!
